EASY CROCHETED HAT

Easy Crocheted Hat

Easy Crochet Hat

This is a very easy pattern that can be done by a beginning crocheter and a quick gift for those last minute occasions.

One skein of 4 ply yarn (I used Red Heart Soft) will make the set of fingerless mittens and hat.  I used a size I crochet hook and because I wanted it to be warm, I used a half-double crochet instead of the single crochet used in the fingerless mitten pattern shown below.

Leaving 18 inches of yarn, chain 46.

Row 1: hdc in back loop only in second chain from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn.

Row 2-35: hdc in back loop only in each hdc across, ch 1, turn.

Row 36: hdc in back loop only in each hdc across. Fasten off leaving 18 inch tail of yarn.

Thread tail of yarn into large darning needle and matching last row of hdc with beginning chain, sew sides together to form a tube.  Now going back to the 18 inches of yarn left at the beginning chain, thread into needle and sewing along the top of the tube formed, gather the top of the tube tightly together with a running stitch and bind off, weaving enough of the left over yarn back into the garment to keep from coming loose with wear. Clip off leftover yarn thread.

A pom pom can be made and attached at the top of the hat if you would like.  Here is a tutorial from Fiber Images showing one way to make one.

This pattern is easily sized.  It can be made longer simply by adding to the beginning chain until it is as long as you would like.  It can be sized to the head by the addition or subtraction of rows.

I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I do.

  3. Where is the pattern for the mittens? I can’t seem to find it.

  4. I enjoyed making this hat, the pattern is easy to use and the directions are accurate. The hat is very warm.

I would have loved to have the pattern for the scarf.

  5. I am going to try this hat and would also appreciate the scarf pattern. Thank you soooo Much…

  6. The Easy Medallion Scarf is the pattern that matches the hat and gloves. The only difference is that I used multiple colors of yarn and added the medallion. I hope you enjoy it…

  7. Is the pattern suppose to become narrow as you complete row 2-35?

  8. Hi Michelle,
No it’s not supposed to get smaller as you go along. Check to be sure that you are working in the first stitch each time you turn a row or the last stitch at the end of each row. That was a problem I had for a long time when I first began to crochet. I hope this helps.

  9. I do alot of crocheting for the needy to be given at Christmas.
I one thing I like to do better than anything else is simple hats of all sizes. I Can’t hardly wait to get my crochet hook to get started.

  10. Dear Michelle,
I really connected with your question….I also was plagued with narrowing crochet and actuall completed one cat tail warmer by mistake. Hope your stiching is going well…I had to read several “turning” tutorials to get it and each project still carries the risk of being a doillie!

    Persistently confused,
    Sara

  11. i really dont understand how to close the top could you help me out there .

  12. what size does this pattern fit

  13. didn’t check box to notify me for new comments

  14. I don’t know an exact size..lol It fits me, so that would be a medium adult woman’s head. It you need it bigger you can add rows. If you need it smaller you can leave some rows off…

    Hope this helps… ;o)
    Have a wonderful day… !

  15. What does “hdc” stand for?

  16. Hi Sherry,
hdc means half double crochet. That is a crochet stitch where the thread is picked up on the needle like a double crochet but then is pulled off the needle all at once instead of in two steps. There is a teaching video on You Tube.com … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxA2osb5Qfk

    Hope this helps… Linda

  17. so for hdc- do i count three holes or do a hdc in each hole (or chain)
and of i do three holes.. do i count 1 as the current hole (chain) i just came from and go into the 3rd
also- is there a way to do the ribbing starting from the top (so it crochets in the round?)

    thanks

  18. Made both with baby Yarn for a new born girl, trimmed them with pink and mauve and added a pink and mauve pompom…very, VERY Cute. Decided to make a second set of fingerless mittens as booties with a turned cuff also trimmed with pink and mauve.

    VERY easy pattern.

  19. Kerry…those sound absolutely gorgeous. I’m so glad you enjoy the pattern…

Ashley…the only way to do this in the round is by using a stitch that goes around the post of the stitch below. That is a very good idea and I will work on coming up with a pattern for it.. As for the question about the hdc… I’m not sure what you are asking. If you are asking about the beginning chain… do the first hdc in the 3rd chain from the hook..the one the hook is in does not cound…. count 1..2…3..and in that third one is the one you use. I hope this answers your question… ;o)
