Mama’s Round Afghan

MamasRoundAfghan I found a leaflet pattern for a round baby blanket that I thought was lovely.  I increased the size of the needle and bought inexpensive yarn at Wal-Mart and began to crochet it.  It grew and grew until this is how big it got…queen size.. lol  I gave it to my mother for Christmas that year… 1989.  Since that time it has been on her guest bedroom bed until two weeks ago.  That’s when it came back to me.

I had a parakeet while I was crocheting this.  When it became so big that with each round the edges would sit on the floor waiting for me to crochet to them…my parakeet would run as fast as his little legs would carry him and run up the afghan, onto my shoulder and then onto the top of my head…lol  I laugh every time I think of him.  My oldest son and my youngest son each made special trips to Wal Mart for more yarn.  Each of my grandchildren except Hannah has played on it, had diapers changed on it and wrapped up in it.  I had it on my bed when I stayed there in nursing school.  And I will never forget Mom’s eyes when she opened it up on that Christmas.

Many people will ask me “Why do you ….. (sew, crochet, spin, knit, naalbind, card weave, embroider, etc)… Don’t you know you can buy those things?”…..  There is not a thing I could buy that would carry the memories that this round afghan carries…. And that’s my answer….

  1. The afghan is beautiful. I love your answer! :)

  2. Why do people always try to tell crafters what a waist of time their craft is by saying they can buy things at a store. It is the love of the person we gift to and the love of the craft! That is a wonderful blanket.

  3. That is a beautiful blanket. Do you know where I can find the pattern or if it exists anymore?

  4. No, Adri, I don’t know. I haven’t seen it anywhere, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. I will do some checking and see what I can find, but will make no promises.. ;o)
