Houndesign Spindles.. in Vancouver

On my Yahoo Spindlers group, there have been several questions re: finding a spindle maker in Canada so Canadian spindlers don’t have to pay the terrible excise taxes for bringing spindles from the US. Well, thought I would pass on what I found this morning.. a true, blue, dyed in the wool (pun intended..grin) Canadian spindle maker.
Hounddesign has not only spindles, but nostepindes, niddy noddys, spinning wheel threaders, and doffers. Please bear in mind that I have never used one of these spindles, but they look very tempting to me. There are no prices listed, but an email address is provided if anyone is looking for more info…
Yarn Harlot Scarf… (free pattern..easy)
October 28, 2007 at 7:55 am | In Crafts, Dye Works, Free Patterns, Handcraft, Handwork, Knit, Spinning | 2 CommentsHave I shown a pic of my Kromski Prelude spinning wheel? Well, just in case I have not..
here it is.. And have I been having fun with it! All the roving in the large bag and the bowl has been spun and am now working on the Merino roving in the brightest white bag. This comes to about 1500 yards of homespun double ply.
The day before yesterday was dye day around here. I used Kool Aid and dyed 3 different colors. I thought I would save some time and effort and soak the yarn in the vinegar water and then just add the Kool Aid mixed with a little water to the water already in the pan…with the yarn still in it. That worked really well except for
the green. I suppose the pan I used was too tall and thin for the amount of yarn I had in it. The dye did not absorb into the center of the pot, therefore I can either call the green variegated or re-dye it. I think it will be variegated..grin
I’ve only dyed once before and that turned out the most lovely peach color (along with a lovely yellow and mint green). When I was trying to decide what to do with them, I came across this pattern on Yarn Harlot’s blog. It’s a very easy to remember one row pattern. And does it look lovely done up! I decided I liked the peach color for this pattern. And a thank you to Knitting Nonni for the point to the pattern….

Homespun Socks
October 14, 2007 at 7:38 am | In Crafts, Crochet, Free Patterns, Handcraft, Handwork | Leave a CommentA while back I made some crocheted socks for DH using the first homespun I did before
the spinning lesson. He likes them so much he decided that I needed a pair, so I made me a pair. Have to admit that mine are a lot softer than his, even tho crochet is not nearly as soft as knitting. I have made these socks before using the pattern from Grafton Fibers…easy Toe-Up Crocheted Socks…but I find that using the homespun 100% wool is a LOT warmer than using the acrylic yarn I had purchased.
Spinning Away…
October 8, 2007 at 7:33 am | In Dye Works, Handcraft, Handwork, Personal, Spinning | Leave a CommentI’ve been spinning away trying to build up a stash that will be large enough to tide me
over should the heart cath on Wednesday put a damper on my spinning. I’m not sure I will be allowed to treadle for a week or two due to the cath insertion being placed in the right groin…so … tomorrow will be dye day. Haven’t decided what colors yet, but will try to have the colors complement the lovely green, orange and yellow that was done a while back.
I would like the first large thing I make with the homespun to be an afghan. The colors are relatively bright for my taste in afghans, but will see if we can’t come up with a complementary color that will sort of tone down the ones I have already dyed…
Quilt As You Go (free tutorial by Ribbonwiz)

When I found this tutorial online for quilting-as-you-go at Camille’s Place, it made we want to try my hand at it. The small quilt I made earlier this year was about the right size for me to handle when sewing and quilting, but it didn’t occur to me that if a person made several of them and attached them together they would make a lovely bed size quilt…
