Russian Yarn Joining…no more loose ends! (tutorial)

Naalbinding Pouch in progess. (I love my needle!)I recently took up naalbinding… With a sliver of oak and a file, I made my first naalbinding needle and off I went into this ancient craft.  Well…. in 900 AD they didn’t have acrylics.  While the relic pieces that have been found in Viking ships were degraded, it was still possible to see that there were no knots in this work.  The wool yarn ends were  felted to each other as the need arises resulting in one long piece of yarn with no joinings. ….  But what about today with all the acrylics …

I came across this tutorial for Russian joining at Auntie M’s and was instantly in love.  This is intended for  work with crochet and  knitting, but could be used any time you need to join threads… I’m in love…  While you are at Auntie M’s, have a look at her free patterns page…

  1. Thanks! I have been using the felted join to felt my ends together, but it requires me to leave my knitting chair. This Russian join can be done with the tools at hand. Great find.

  3. I found out about this last year and won’t use any other join. It works on everything from lace weight yarn to aran! and once it’s knitted in you just can’t find it! I cackle a bit everytime I do one and it just magically vanashes. hehehe
